SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS
This training focuses on substance use disorders among healthcare professionals, exploring how these issues differ from those in the general population and why. Participants will learn to recognize signs and symptoms of substance use disorders in healthcare professionals and understand how these disorders can impact their ability to practice safely and effectively. The training will also cover the distinction between illness and impairment, emphasizing the need for professional peer evaluation, treatment, and monitoring. Additionally, participants will gain awareness of the Utah Professional Health Program (UPHP) services available and learn how to access and refer colleagues to UPHP for support and assistance. At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:
1: Understand how health issues, including substance use disorders, among healthcare professionals may differ from those of the general population, and explore the reasons for these differences.
2: Recognize signs and symptoms of substance use disorders in healthcare professionals.
3: Learn how substance use disorders may affect a healthcare professional’s ability to practice with reasonable skill and safety.
4: Explain the difference between illness and impairment.
5: Understand why and how a healthcare professional’s substance use disorder needs professional peer evaluation, treatment and monitoring.
6: Be aware of the scope and type of UPHP services available.
7: Know how to access and refer to UPHP.
