PROFESSIONAL HEALTH PROGRAM
When a Professional Needs Help: The role of a Professional Health Program
PHP’s offer a confidential path for individuals to seek help for burnout, mental health or substance use disorders and a therapeutic alternative to regulatory awareness. This training will provide an overview of chronic stress, burnout, physical health issues, mental health and substance use disorders, and introduction to UPHP’s services. Information about safe haven programs and the benefits of long-term, confidential monitoring for substance use disorders will be discussed. At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:
1: Have an understanding of the types of illnesses that can affect healthcare professionals and for which a referral to UPHP would be helpful (or necessary).
2: Be aware of the common warning signs of illness that should prompt a referral for evaluation.
3: Understand how the cultural environment in the medical community may exacerbate risk factors or discourage healthcare professionals to seek help.
4: Be aware of the scope and type of UPHP services available.
5: Have an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment for healthcare professionals with health problems within Utah.
6: Know how to make a referral.
7: Know what to expect if a diagnosis is confirmed.
8: Be aware of the possible outcomes based on the type of diagnosis established.
