Language Matters: A Practical Approach to Talking About Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.

Language plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions and experiences related to substance use disorders and mental health disorders. The way we talk about these issues can either promote understanding and support or perpetuate stigma and barriers to care. This presentation will explore the impact of language on individuals with these disorders and provide strategies for using language that is respectful, empowering, and destigmatizing. At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

1: Recognize at least 2-3 potential impacts of stigma for individuals with substance use and mental health disorders,

2: Learn practical strategies for using language that promotes understanding, empathy, and support for individuals with these disorders.

3: Gain knowledge in order to use their language to advocate for change in how these disorders are perceived and treated in their communities and workplaces.
